Life Coaching and Therapy: What Is the Difference?

They serve different purposes

Psychotherapy is healthcare provided by appropriately licensed professionals. It may include diagnosis and treatment of mental-health conditions. Life coaching focuses on current goals, decisions, practical action, and accountability.

Coaching often focuses on

  • Sorting through a decision or goal
  • Choosing practical next steps
  • Building accountability and follow-through
  • Reviewing what happened and adjusting the plan

Therapy is not a lesser choice

Choosing therapy does not mean you failed at coaching or are somehow too much. It is the appropriate choice when you need diagnosis, treatment, trauma work, substance-use treatment, or other clinical support.

Can you use both?

Sometimes. Coaching may be used alongside care from a qualified mental-health professional when that is suitable and the roles stay clear. Coaching does not replace treatment.
